So Legit

Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded- The Re-Up
Nicki Minaj
7.5/10 on my bangin' scale

Nicki Minaj, apparently, is legit. She's a bitch. In fact, she yelled at my cuz on the radio only last week. But... I don't care. I love it. In her new album (well, kind of... she re-reloaded Roman in what she calls a "Re-Up"), Nicki Minaj flaunts her ego.

At her worst, Nicki "Va Va Voom"s in her teeny bopper track, and raps alongside singer/model Cassie in "The Boys." You gotta make money somehow. This must be Wayne's entrepreneurial influence.

Hands down, the best track on the "Re-Up" is "I'm Legit." In a single song, Nicki resurrects Ciara, gives shout outs to Sinead O'Connor and Harriet Tubman, and completely persuades me that she "is the shit, legit." She's an independent bitch ("like July fourth") who is in control of her own body (she's "on the pill" and does pilates). In this song, her style is bisected--she alternately raps like a metronomed robot and a slightly more refined version of the angry speed demon we came to love in Kanye's "Monster."

Nicki goes political in "I Endorse These Strippers." She pokes fun at the election and everyone who went apeshit when she supposedly endorsed Mitt Romney in that "Mercy" remix. And lesbihonest, the only reason this song is in the good column is because who doesn't want to sing, "oo, boobs boobs boobs boobs lotta boobs?"

"Freedom," "High School," and "Up In Flames" are also decent tracks on the "Re-Up." But, her self-importance shines again: what better way to show how legit great you are than to compare yourself to Jesus in the first line of "Freedom?"

Hello, Seattle. Did you mail in your ballots?

If you live in not Ohio, you still have reason to mail out your ballots (or head over to the polls if you're not a WA stater)!

Me: In Seattle we had the choice to:

1. approve or deny gay marriage
2. legalize or forbid casual marijuana consumption/possession
3. vote for democrat or socialist WA state senator

Shobs: Hello Seattle.

King County Voters' Guide: Vote Approved on Ref 74!

The King County voters guide may not-so-subtly be reminding lesbians-- who are more likely to vote in favor of Ref 74 (the gay marriage bill)-- to get their ballots. Check out the photo they have reminding you to call in if you haven't received your ballot yet:

That's right, WNBA PLAYERS. YES.

Conversations you have as a Curler.

Man on Bus: What's in that bag?
Me: A broom.
Man on Bus: Uh oh, you aren't a witch, are you?

That is a legitimate question to ask.

Three is a trend

Slaughterhouse and Cee-Lo Green are more than one year late to the 90s dance music party (see Haddaway/Eminem and Robin S/Jason Derulo).

Slaughterhouse and Cee-Lo bring a bit of innovation, however, in that they completely change the lyrics of Corona's 1994 hit "Rhythm of the Night" to "this is my mother fucking life." And if you don't know what "Rhythm of the Night" is, go M.F. find an archive of KTU ("the beat of new york") circa 90s-mid.

Sea Times: Ride Naked. B/C YOLO

From the Seattle Times' coverage of the Fremont Solstice Parade:

Two of the riders — naked except for frilly net skirts (black for him, purple for her) and matching body paint — were having an unabashedly good time.
"We got drunk last night and decided to do this," said Alex Shanis, a software engineer.
"You only live once," added his friend, Chelsea Wright, a University of Washington student.

Fav. music trend: One word

Dear music community,

Keep making me laugh. Keep repeating yourselves (without a melody or interesting rhythm).

Love,

Laura

PS. Here are my favorite examples.

The first time I noticed this trend was in Rebecca Black's notorious "Friday":

She repeats the word "fun" four times, most likely to emphasize how fun the weekend is. Not especially remarkable, but I regard the quadruple fun as the best part of the song.

Fast forward to Big Sean's "Dance":

Big Sean repeats the word ass for most of his (excellent) chorus. That is approximately 20 times per verse. This song is revolutionary in its simplicity. I lurve it.

Most recently, I've become enamored with Rihanna's "Birthday Cake":

Rihanna (who annoyingly has been remixed with Chris Brown, who she is on good terms with again) repeats "cake" over and over again. WHO DOESN'T LOVE CAKE!?!?!

Same old tune 2012

My sister sang a lot of songs on our trip to New Zealand.

They're in a mix here:

It's similar in spirit to the one I posted back in 2009. Only possibly more random.

To Thai for.

Jamjuree
15th Ave in Capitol Hill
9/10 on my bangin' scale
(Yes, that's right, I gave it a higher score than Thai Tom)

I haven't had a meal that has excited me this much since I last went to Tilth, which means a lot since it's my favorite restaurant in Seattle. I walked into Jamjuree hungry and a little sad. I left ecstatic.

We started off with some spring rolls. Crispy, not too exciting, except that they were (very) warm.

Then came the entree. I decided to go out on a limb and try something that I'd never tasted before. I got the Ba Mee Hang from the Specials menu:
Egg noodle with garlic-soy sauce, barbeque pork, spinach, ground peanut, onion, cilantro.
<$10. I seriously never realized Thai food could be this good. I'm used to Thai on the Ave, which relies a little too much on the overall deliciousness of greasy food.

Jamjuree's Ba Mee Hang definitely brought me to a new level in Thai food. The barbecue pork brought a sweetness, the spinach freshness and crispiness, the garlic soy and peanut a saltiness, the sauce was spicy ( I ordered 2 out of 4 spicy), and ... I always love me some egg noodles.

Oh, so good. I am definitely going back for this dish.

Snow day (?) commenters

Best part about waiting to hear if there's no class tomorrow? The comments on the school's announcements page. Here's a good sample (click to make it bigger):
